Memorial Library Staff Information

Professional Development

All members of the Memorial Library staff are expected to demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development, maintaining and enhancing knowledge and skills for themselves and their coworkers. (ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education, 2018, 8.3)

Additionally, Professional Librarians are expected to engage in scholarship and professional service through attending professional conferences and similar events, delivering papers and presentations that evidence an ongoing engagement with the discipline, and participating in leadership and support for professional organizations. (Annual Evaluation Guidelines for Professional Librarians; Policies & Procedure for Librarian Rank and Promotion in Rank)

Approval from the Library Director and the Provost is required. Follow the procedures outlined below. Submit forms at least 1 week in advance.

In general, reimbursable travel expenses include:

  • conference registration & event fees
  • the actual cost of breakfast, lunch & dinner
  • lodging at an event-associated hotel, or other lodging at a comparable rate
  • airfare, train fare, or mileage to and from your destination (unless mileage or train fare would significantly exceed airfare)
  • mileage or transportation to and from the airport and to and from your home
  • business-related transportation expenses at your destination
  • internet service at your lodging

Use your own college-issued purchasing card or check with Jenny Kleine about paying for professional development expenses.

Professional Development Funding

  • For the 2022-2023 academic year, full time library staff are allocated up to $2,000 each for professional development activities. Webinars, online conferences, etc. do not require additional approval.

Travel

Professional development that involves travel must be approved in advance by the Provost. Complete the Request for Professional Travel and Conference Funding form on the Provost's VikingWeb page. To be considered at work, and thus covered by worker’s compensation insurance during your travel, you must complete this form even if you do not plan to seek reimbursement of expenses

The Approval of Professional Travel form must be signed by the library director and the provost, so please allow at least one week for processing. The original travel form with signatures will be returned to you when the approval process is complete.
