What are Skillshops?
Skillshops are hour-long workshops facilitated by Memorial Library staff to build on information literacy skills and promote library services and resources. Topics range from research basics and evaluating sources to citation help and in-depth coverage of various subject areas. While many librarians have the opportunity to visit students in the classroom and meet one-on-one during research consultations, we want to offer another way to grow student library skills!
Through our workshop program, we encourage students to discover more about their library independently and attend sessions that speak to their own interests or needs.
Here are some example topics and descriptions from the past:
- Intro to Library Resources: Join your very own librarians for an introduction or refresher on library services! We will be diving into the library website to show you where to go for all that you have access to from the library from laptop check-outs to your subscription to the New York Times!
- Research Basics: In this workshop, we will show you how to use your research topic to search through all the resources you have access to through the library. We will start with developing a research question, then break that down into searchable keywords to broaden or narrow your research.
- Research Mapping: Research mapping is a way to keep your information sources organized as you work through your essays or projects. Through creating a research map, you can evaluate and utilize your sources much more efficiently. Bring your own assignments and research needs so we can create charts that will help you in real time!
- Reading Academic Sources: Reading through hundreds of pages of academic journals can be tough! We want to share some tips with you on how to read through scholarly sources quickly and get what you really need out of the articles you choose.
