Dissertations accepted at accredited U.S. institutions since 1861, and thousands of new dissertations and theses are added each year. For dissertations from 1997 and later, PDFs of some titles are available. Not all dissertations from all participating universities are included in Dissertation Abstracts. Coverage depends on the date a university began online contribution of their abstracts to University Microfilms International (now ProQuest). Also, for many European universities the contribution of abstracts was the responsibility of the student and therefore may not have been included.
