The Daughters of Berry, founded by Martha Berry in 1939, is a group of Berry College alumnae "who come together to preserve the traditions and heritage of Berry College". The organization began publishing Favorite Recipes of the Daughters of Berry in 1951 as a fundraiser "to preserve the traditions of Berry, and to build a Museum."1 The cookbook featured several of Martha Freeman's recipes, as well as a biographical sketch. In the 1957, 1975, and 1994 editions, Freeman is described as "the colored mammy who 'raised' the Berry children". The text was revised in the 2004 edition, where Freeman is described as beginning her work for the Berry family as a "house servant," who "helped cook, clean, and partially raise the Berry children."
