Information about Memorial Library's transition to OpenAthens for off-campus access to eresources

OpenAthens HomeIn coordination with GALILEO, Memorial Library has moved from proxy-based authentication for our subscription electronic resources to OpenAthens. 

On campus, there will be no change to the way you access online resources when you are using the Berry College network. Off campus, you will still be prompted for your Berry Active Directory credentials, but the process will look a little different.

Off-campus, students, faculty, and staff will have the option to access the library's subscribed content without going through the library website. The exact process varies, but where it is supported, you will have the ability to log into OpenAthens by selecting Berry from a list and entering your Berry AD credentials.

There will be no change to the library's subscribed resources as a result of moving to OpenAthens, and campus researchers should be able to continue using Memorial Library's resources with little or no disruption. Do I Need to Do Anything?

Check to see if your bookmarks, saved links, or reading list links to Memorial Library-subscribed content need to be updated. (Here is information about how to link to Memorial Library's e-resources). Old links that contain the "ucheckberry" phrase will no longer work after July 1, 2023.

How does OpenAthens work?

The OpenAthens identity management system is a SAML-based access management service that allows GALILEO and Memorial Library to enable access to subscribed electronic resources on and off campus. OpenAthens is supplied by Jisc, a British not-for-profit information technology services company.

General Tips

Here are some general tips for accessing the Memorial Library's e-resources via OpenAthens:

  • The Research Databases list, the Journal Locator, and WorldCat Discovery are still the most comprehensive and reliable ways to access Memorial Library's resources, regardless of format.
  • If accessing a resource directly through a publisher website without going through the library website first, log in using the Institutional Login (wording may vary by publisher), select Berry from the institution list, and log in using your Berry Active Directory credentials. Depending on the resource, your current location, and whether you've come through the library website, there may be several steps to log into a resource. See our FAQ for more information.
  • Sometimes, browser caching can cause problems accessing library e-resources. Try clearing the browser cache and restarting the browser, or try using a different browser. If you are having trouble accessing resources off-campus, here are more troubleshooting tips.
