African American Women Writers

Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was a hugely popular American author, whose best-selling books include five volumes of autobiography, starting with the National Book Award-nominated I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969). She also wrote half a dozen books of poetry, a similar number of plays, several screenplays, books for children, recipe books and countless essays. She is best-known for her frank memoirs of a life that encompassed trauma, hardship, political activism and exotic travel.
