African American Women Writers

Tracy K. Smith (1972-), American poet, librettist, memoirist, and academic, is recognized as a major figure in contemporary American poetry. She is known for poems that examine such themes as American history, family relationships, and loss. Smith, who served as the country's twenty-second poet laureate, has won major awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, as well as the James Laughlin Award, given by the American Academy of Poets.
